This is how media found me without a pitch


Yesterday, I told you that you do not need to be “big enough” to get media coverage.

Today, I want to tell you something that may make you feel even better:

Sometimes, you do not even need to pitch.

I know. As someone who teaches people how to pitch the media, that sounds like I just walked into my own sales email and kicked over the furniture.

I post about my Little Free Library, tag people and places when it makes sense, and use keywords that make it very obvious what I am talking about.

And because I kept showing up around the same topic, people started associating me with it.

That is how media attention starts.

Sometimes it starts with a reporter, editor, producer, or writer searching for a story and realizing:

“Oh, this person is already talking about the thing I need.”

That is exactly how I landed an article in Business Insider about the vending machine my son and I operate too.

That came from a social media post on a different platform.

This is what most business owners miss.

They think social media is only for selling, getting likes, and making reels where you point at floating words like a haunted flight attendant.

But your social media can also make you discoverable, show the media what you care about, give them proof that you have something to say, and turn your everyday expertise, projects, opinions, behind-the-scenes moments, and weird little stories into something someone else wants to feature.

That does not mean you need to post all day or become an influencer.

It means you need to be intentional because the right post can become a podcast interview, a local newspaper feature, a magazine mention, a TV segment, or an online article.

A bigger opportunity you did not even know was looking for you.
