Well, I did it. I quit one of my freelancing gigs because dealing with the mental health issues of an unwell manager was taking its toll on me. For more on what I mean, click here and read the LinkedIn post I made about it last week. The post has gotten nearly 30,000 impressions and resonated with a lot of people… which means there are more crazy people in leadership positions than I thought. Uh. If you’re in LA…If you’re in LA, be on the lookout for Brentwood City Lifestyle, a hyper-local luxury magazine. The parent company is City Lifestyle, which has nearly 200 magazines nationwide. The magazine is mailed directly to 7,000 residences and 500 local businesses in the Brentwood area each month. Have some local profiles, features, news, or events to pitch? Reach out to Jamie Stone at Jamie.Stone@CityLifestyle.com. If you’re an Inventor…If you’re an inventor, my friend Alyson Dutch is writing the cover story for Inventors Digest Magazine. She is focused on the biggest innovations in the history of the beauty industry that have been either trademarked or patented. For example, "the French manicure" will be attributed to Orly. She needs three others, so send her your suggestions at alydutch@gmail.com. Use the subject line "Beauty TM or Patent" to get her attention! If you’re a Foodie or Health Nut…Dina el Nabli is working on a story about healthy snacks and lunch ideas made with clean ingredients for lunchboxes and after school. This is for New Jersey Family’s Back to School hub. Email her at dina@njfamily.com. Whatcha Reading?I just started I Need You To Read This. I was totally sold on the cover. I just finished Party Girl by Anna David. (She is my author friend who helps other people become authors. I told you about her and her program a few weeks ago.) Oh, and I used a Paris Hilton song in this Instagram post about the book, so she liked it and commented 🔥 on it. That's hot. (Ever since reading her memoir, I'm obsessed and just think the world of Paris.) Before that, it was The Wedding People (so cute), All the Colors of the Dark (slow, heartbreaking, but good), The Happiest Man on Earth (even more heartbreaking), and The Reappearance of Rachel Price (great thriller). I’m still making my way through Ultra-Processed People. While very educational, it’s kinda boring, so I’m trying to push through because it is interesting… just kinda dry, no pun intended. On the topic of books, I need to stay off the internet because I keep getting books, thus buying more bookshelves. Click here to see the making of the latest (and cutest) bookshelf. A teenage founder was introduced to me by Kristin Kenzy from Drunk Business Advice after building a new product called CoDuck. He described it as a tool for building enterprise-scale websites with advanced capabilities and the simplicity and ease of use people love. In his view, most current products make you choose between power and usability, and CoDuck is his attempt to close that gap. In the email intro, Kristin asked: How can he get attention for a tool like this? My answer was simple...
Bookstagram might look like chaos from the outside. And to be fair, sometimes it is. People are yelling about fictional men, spiraling over plot twists, and forming full-blown friendships in the comments. But there’s a reason it works so well, and honestly, brands should be paying attention. As someone who spends a lot of time on Bookstagram, I can tell you this: People don’t show up just for book recommendations. They show up because the content makes them feel something, gives them...
When people talk about “optimizing for AI,” they make it sound way more mysterious than it needs to be. A lot of what helps AI understand your business is the same stuff that helps actual humans understand your business. Clear messaging. Updated information. Specific language. Easy-to-find answers. I talked about this on a Storyblok webinar yesterday with three other marketers, and one thing kept coming up: AI cannot confidently describe, recommend, or surface your brand if your website is...
