creating habits—not setting goals

Happy New Year, friend 🥂

I’m not going to bombard you with goal-setting stuff.

I’m sure your inbox is full of that!

Habits, Not Goals

…but one thing I thought was brilliant that I have to share with you came from Alex & Books.

(I love this guy. If you’re not already on his email list, run to click here and join.)

In his last email, he talked about a book he read called Elastic Habits.

His review was so helpful in creating habits—not setting goals—but ensuring those habits are flexible, so you’re (almost) always winning.

For example, if you want to create an exercise habit, you could do one of these three things daily:

  • Mini: Walk for 30 minutes
  • Plus: Lift for 30 minutes
  • Elite: Walk and lift for 30 minutes each

One Story… Lots Of Times

Here’s a lesson from the PR world that’ll make you rethink the rules.

The myth:
"Once a top outlet covers your story, no one else will touch it."

The truth:
It’s possible to land the SAME story twice… sometimes, even in the SAME outlet.

Sounds wild, right? But here’s the thing:

  • Breaking the rules beats following the crowd.
  • Persistence beats hesitation every time.
  • Knowing how to reframe a pitch is the real magic.

Some PR pros have done this repeatedly, turning a single story into multiple wins.

Here’s the lesson:

  1. Don’t stop at the first “yes.” After a big win, follow up with other angles.
  2. Tailor the pitch to the audience. Show why the story is still fresh or relevant.
  3. Keep relationships intact. Respect media contacts, but don’t fear rejection.

Most people leave opportunities on the table because they assume what’s “not possible.” But with smart strategies, the so-called impossible often just needs a little tweaking.

I’m On A Podcast

I used to make the podcast rounds on a pretty regular basis.

But my goals have changed… and I just don’t pitch myself anymore.

However, when people reach out, sometimes, I give them a yes.

Click here to listen to me on Visibility with Purpose talk about lots of things including how to spot scammy 'PR' pitches in your DMs and the truth about Forbes Council and paid media opportunities.

Read With Me

Finally, I bought myself my own Christmas present—a Book of the Month subscription.

I joined for just $5 for my first month and got a “book person” hat.

If you’re a reader, check it out here.

That's all I got this week!

Any requests for the next one?

Hi Reader, Last week, I went to PitchFest at ThrillerFest in NYC, and let me tell you... It was a whirlwind. For three hours, I met with as many literary agents and editors as I could, pitching Zoe’s Got Baggage again and again until I could probably do it in my sleep. The best part? Most agents said "yes" and asked to see more. Now we wait... This is what I learned that I can pass on to you: Don’t treat a pitch like a speech. Treat it like the start of a conversation. At PitchFest, we only...

Here's a quick update from the “trying to get a literary agent” trenches, because things are getting interesting. So far:- 51 agents pitched- 18 no’s- 7 full manuscript requests And yes, those 7 requests are included in the 18 responses… which means there are still a lot of agents out there silently reading, considering, or ghosting me. Seven full requests feels like real momentum. It means something about this story is working. It also means I’ve entered the part of the process where...

I’m off to Ohio this weekend to be in my sister’s wedding. Technically, I’m the matron of honor, but I reject that title on principle. “Matron” sounds old, and no one wants to be anybody’s maid. So I’m calling myself the best woman. Equal rights, etc. Also, I’m the minister. Which means it took me about two minutes and $35 to become legally qualified to marry them, so please wish me luck. Feels like a system with a little too much trust in me, but here we are. In other news, I was having a...
