A writer I follow did this desk tour thing on Substack, and I thought - That’s pretty cool. So, if I think it’s cool, maybe you will too. Welcome to my office. Q: Describe your workspace. This used to be my sons room (sons as in TWO boys with bunk beds). Then, we added two bedrooms and a bathroom onto our house… and now it’s my office. I’m going with the ostrich feather vibe on a wall and with a floor lamp. I also have fun office sayings on the wall, like defining “per my last email” as “bitch, can you read?” I have some shelves (because I can never have enough shelves), a book cart, some LEGO decor (thanks, Landon), and a big TV that doesn’t get turned on often enough. My violin and music stand are in one corner, and I have some bulletin boards with thank you notes and whatnot that I need to find a spot for. Q: What are your three favorite items on your desk right now? My can or bottle of Coke or Mexican Coke. (I’m addicted.) My phone. My paper planner. Here's a video of my husband and me connecting my desktop. Q: Do you keep anything specific at your desk that you use as inspiration to stay creative or positive? I have The Daily Stoic… that I never open. I guess my Taylor Swift playlist on Amazon Music that shuffles through all her songs, so I hear a lot that were never mainstream that are just as fabulous! Q: Is there anything you absolutely HAVE to have at your desk/workspace or you can't be productive? Do Google Calendar and Slack count? Q: Is there anything you'd change about your workspace? If so, what? So, to get better sound, I bought these honeycomb-looking things for the wall… and put them on wrong. Now, they’re stuck there and they’re all sideways. I read that I can get them off with a blow dryer, but then the glue is still on my wall. I know this because I tried with one, panicked when I saw the wall, and stuck it back on. But, the sideways honeycomb is killing me, so I may need to blow dry them all off, sand the wall, repaint the wall, and start over. FML. Q: Describe your ideal work day at your desk. On one side, I have a chair and a walking pad on the other side. I like to walk at least a mile a day. (When you’re working and walking, it’s so fast and easy.) I also have a playlist on (hence the no TV) while I work. I used to be a sucker for a full color coded calendar, but now I’m loving an open calendar and feel less stress when I can pick when I do certain tasks throughout the day. You know, the whole “eat the frog” thing. Q: What books are on your desk right now? The Daily Stoic and Glitter Every Day. I’m supposed to read one thing a day… and I don’t. This is my reminder to do that. Here are today’s: The Daily Stoic: “Today, not tomorrow, is the day that we can start to be good.” Glitter Every Day: “I want minimum information given with maximum politeness” - Jackie Kennedy Onassis on saying less is sometimes the ultimate power. (See won an Emmy on this day.) I also have a book cart full of rotating books I get sent from publishers to chat about them on social media. That’s it! What’s cool in your office? |
Learn step-by-step how businesses are earning media exposure (without ads) from a TV reporter turned PR agency owner every Thursday.
It’s been a while since I shared some media opportunities with you. Here’s a tip on responding: Give the journalist everything they need in the emails. Make the subject line the keywords in the pitch. Offer as much advice as you can based on the little information you have below. Then, share a 2-3 sentence bio on why you’re the perfect person to site with a link to your website as well as your contact information. Good luck! Wow. It’s been a minute, huh? That’s because I took my first real vacation without a laptop to Italy, France, and Spain. It was amazing! But now, we’re back at it, friend. Work shouldn’t feel hard. And yet, so many of us are set up to fail. Not because we suck... but because our environment does. A couple of years ago, I was reporting for a nonprofit in Palm Beach. Every month, I had to send a newsletter, but it needed the CEO's approval first. She never approved it on time. I was also...
"We want PR to drive sales." Big red flag. Massive misunderstanding. Here’s the thing… PR ≠ Marketing ≠ Branding. They work together, but they’re not the same. Let’s break it down (like you're five): PR builds belief. It earns trust. Shapes perception. Boosts credibility. Not clicks. Not conversions. Credibility. Marketing moves money. It’s campaign-driven. Action-focused. Think: sales, leads, sign-ups. Branding builds the backbone. It's your vibe, voice, values, and visuals. Without it, PR...
